Christina Aguilera was given the monumental task of singing the national anthem last night to kick off Super Bowl XLV but things didn't go exactly as planned.
Millions watched and some of us even sang along as Aguilera stepped up to the mic and began to belt out "The Star-Spangled Banner" – something she's been practicing for a long time.
"I have been performing the Anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true," Christina told christinaaguilera.com. "I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event."
Her look was amazing and she sounded spectacular hitting every note. Things were moving along smoothly – up until the fourth line of the first stanza. While we were expecting to hear "O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming", the Burlesque singer instead swooned "What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last reaming".
We've got to give it to her, she may have stumbled a bit but she didn't drop the ball. Aguilera remained poised and professional and continued on. And we must say she did a hell of a job finishing one of the most difficult songs in American history. Aguilera was quickly on damage control, issuing a public apology for the mishap:
"I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place." Abc4.com reports Aguilera said, "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."
Aguilera's Macy Gray-like moment didn't effect the support she received from her fellow artists.
Fellow Super Bowl performer Will.i.am posted a picture and tweeted:
"Xtina sing'n wonderful"
The Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger posted on her twitter:
"Lea M n X tina just killed it "sangin"! Sounded amazing here"
But Jordin Sparks really hit the nail on the head tweeting:
"The test of a true artist is continuing even when things go a little left & not letting ppl know it did during the performance. #ilovextina"
We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
