Meet Ana Lilia and Edgard, our Quiero Mi Boda couple of the week. This pair of lovebirds is like no other that we’ve ever seen, or heard for that matter. Why? Because they have a huge obstacle in their way… one MAJOR language barrier.

Ana Lilia is 31 years-old and born and bred in Mexico City. Edgard is a 31 year-old Philipino who speaks even less Spanish than Ana Lilia speaks English. As if that were rough enough, Ana Lilia speaks absolutely no Philipino, and her mother-in-law speaks absolutely no Spanish. I hope the language of love is enough to break down the gigantic language barriers that these two face.

Then again, come to think about it, maybe NOT understanding your significant other’s family is not such a bad thing. I mean how many fights between wife and mother-in-law would be averted if they just didn’t understand each other. I imagine that it would be like something out of a movie, where Edgard offers to Spanish-Philipino translate for his wife and mother and then he changes around the actual context of what their saying to avoid any conflict… It would definitely have its benefits, don’t you agree?

Changing the subject a bit, when I first saw the promos for this couple’s episode, I thought that Ana Lilia was going to be THE BIGGEST bridezilla on Earth. After watching the little closer, I realized that she was just profoundly sad to not be able to share her special day with her parents, sisters and family in general. I really can’t blame her. It was amazing to see how she absolutely lit up when Edgard surprised her with her sister and brother-in-law, and then with her parents. He’s a keeper!

The last thing I want to point out in this critique is the many cultural differences that these two face. I mean, first it was the Ubeng cake vs. cupcake dilemma, then it was the "everything is Philipino and nothing is Mexican" dilemma, then things balanced out more or less when Ana Lilia’s sister brought her the traditional Mexican star and flowers. The major indicator of cultural differences? Edgard told his bride that she had to show up at the church at 11am, the time the actual ceremony was supposed to begin. Any God fearing Latino KNOWS that his bride-to-be is bound to be at least half an hour late. If she needs to be there at 11am, he should have told her she needed to be there at 10am, don’t you agree?
