DADDY YANKEE SURPRISES AGENTES DE CAMBIO: DONS NET CAFE

Reggaeton superstar, Daddy Yankee surprised Tr3s' Agentes de Cambio, Dons Net Café, at Santa Barbara High School. The Dons Net Café is a student-run social entrepreneurial business program at Santa Barbara High School funded by the Regional Occupational Program. Students volunteer after-school, nights and weekends to help local community members complete their tax returns and obtain Individual Tax Identification Numbers for those who are interested in gaining citizenship. The group also does environmental work through street clean-ups, graffiti removal and recycling projects. Their mission is to educate and empower both youth and community to create change that is both beneficial to society and to the environment while running a profitable student run social entrepreneurial business. The Tr3s Agentes de Cambio award is a fitting tribute to all the wonderful things the members of the Dons Net Café have accomplished.

PITBULL SURPRISES AGENTE DE CAMBIO: JOSE

Meet Tr3s' Agente de Cambio, Jose. Jose was born in Bogota, Colombia and came to the United States when he was 10. He excelled academically, ranking in the top 4th percentile of his graduating class of approximately 700 students. At the end of his junior year, he discovered he was undocumented. Jose did not let his status in this country stop him from pursing a higher education, he applied and got accepted to Miami Dade Honors. He is currently the President of the Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus and represents a student-led organization called Students Working for Equal Rights (SWER). S.W.E.R. is a youth-led movement to raise awareness about social justice and equal access to education, satisfying the needs for all individuals who seek to further their education by means of grassroots organizing, political education, alliance building, nonviolent direct action and civic engagement. They speak on behalf of the million undocumented students that were brought to the United States at a very young age and grew up in this country but when they graduate from high school their future is uncertain because of their legal status. Many of these students come from various backgrounds, different stories, diverse lives, yet they all have one purpose, they want to continue living in the United States and become what they couldn’t be back in their country of origin. As a core leader of S.W.E.R., Jose hopes to achieve justice and equality through the power of solidarity.

MEET TR3S AGENTE DE CAMBIO: KATHY

Raised in South Central Los Angeles in a single parent, Mexican household along with her 6 siblings, Kathy knows first-hand how focus and determination is necessary to succeed academically. Despite the hardships of being a single mother and raising 7 children, Kathy’s mother chose to bus Kathy out of South Central so that she could attend a high school in a better resourced neighborhood in the name of a good education. Ultimately, her hard work paid off as Kathy became the first in her family to go to college. She attended UCLA and it was there that she realized the resources available in South Central were different from those in the schools she attended. Upon graduating, she decided that it was her responsibility to give back to the community to help alleviate the disturbing educational gap. She is now serving her second year with City Year, leading a team of first year corps members and acting as a tutor, mentor, and role model to students at risk of dropping out of high school.
